WAX CASTING
The direct wax technique was the first type of method used for casting bronze, followed by solid investment core casting and ceramic shell casting.
I model my pieces in wax, a mixture of bee’s wax, paraffin and resin that I mix myself and then poor into long strips so that they are ready to use. All I have to do is heat them up so that I can model the sculpture.
The finished sculpture in wax is then taken to the Fundición Buchhass, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is where I have been casting my pieces for 10 years. Bronze casting is a very complex art in itself, involving several pairs of very skilled hands, which is why it is so expensive. There are different steps to the process which I describe below. The whole process, from after the wax sculpture is finished to applying the bronze patina, usually takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks. |
